About the Founder

Derrick Nathadius Terry is a special educator, math teacher, public relations professional, coach, mentor, and author who has always had a passion for education. Born into a military family, Derrick is originally from Birmingham, Alabama and has resided in Maryland for over 30 years. Derrick received his professional teaching endorsements in special education from the Virginia Department of Education and the Maryland State Department of Education.  He has a Masters of Arts in Mass Communication (concentration in Public Relations) and Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications from Towson University as well as an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Information Management from the Community College of the Air Force. Derrick is also an adjunct professor at Trinity Washington University and worked in the local government sector before changing his career path to a special educator with over 18 years in the secondary and higher education arena.

Derrick has been active in his community as a coach, mentor, and community advocate.  He is a member and former President/Vice-President of Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., former President of Sigma Alpha Lambda Foundation, Inc., as well as current Director of Light the Way Mentoring Program to name few. He has mentored over 100 young men, assisted with providing $19k to 17 Southern Maryland high school seniors to further their education, and facilitated numerous college tours.

He currently resides in Maryland with his wife and two children.
  • Instructing thousands of special needs and general education students in the subjects of Algebra, Geometry, Basic, Math, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, World History I/II, and US History to name a few.
  • Providing professional development workshops in special education compliance, assessment interpretation, collaboration, student accommodations/modifications, classroom management, and the co-teaching model.
  • Supervision and monitoring of over 30 special education teachers and paraprofessionals.
  • Administering, evaluating and interpreting individual assessments such as Woodcock-Johnson Test  of Achievement III.
  • One-on-one and/or group crisis counseling to over 50 emotionally disturbed students.
  • Developing and implementing Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Improvement Plans (BIPs) for special education students.
  • Conducting and attending IEP manifestation determination review meetings as IEP Chairperson.
  • Participatnt n the disciplinary process for students with disabilities recommended for short/long-term suspension.
  • Assisting countless general education teachers with identifying students for  preparation of the referral and/or  consideration of special education services.
